Bedfordshire Domestic Violence Partnership - Working together to reduce domestic violence

Independent Domestic Violence Advisers (IDVA)

This IDVA project aims to deliver support that has not previously been available to victims of domestic violence who wish to press charges against their abuser.  These workers provide specialist support throughout this process and will also be able to access other services depending on what the person wants or needs.  They possess specialist knowledge of both criminal and civil courts and will be able to advise on a range of associated issues.

We currently employ two full time advisers, one of which will be based in Bedford and the second in Dunstable.  The Advisers are managed by Victim Support and will work closely with the police and other agencies.  The key point to remember about these posts is that they are independent - they are there for the victim and to support the victim's decisions and are not concerned with achieving targets.

Police officers are required to complete a risk indicator check list in order to evaluate the level of risk for each case.  Identified cases will the be referred to the Adviser for support. Please see the leaflet available to download on the right of this page which contains further information on the Advisors.
